A place where every corner tells a story
and each stone holds a secret from the past
Our History
Many years ago in the 18th century, the houses in Bernal, apart from being large, had large patios, stables and corrals where they kept animals such as cows, sheep, goats and pigs and of course horses. The wealthiest had properties close to the Villa de San Sebastián Bernal. Some of them had many hectares and others had orchards.
The Cabrera family, the original founders of the town in 1647, owned properties near the community, including one of the most emblematic hotels in the state of Querétaro, which, due to its old and ancestral buildings such as a fortress, once served not only as a place for the family to stroll, but also as a place of defense and a lime kiln.
It was in 1990 when the idea of developing a different hotel in this place was considered, a hostel like those that exist in Europe.
For more than 16 years, the ruins of the stone buildings were restored, and only a couple of castle towers survived the old construction. The idea was strengthened on a trip through Tuscany in Italy, where on the outskirts of some small villages, ruins of small castles were seen. The idea was to build a hotel under the mountain of solid rock that is more than eight million four hundred thousand years old, today known worldwide as Peña de Bernal.
As the restoration of the building progressed, the first three rooms were put up for sale and immediately rented out. Little by little, without altering the landscape, another 25 very comfortable rooms were opened with exceptional views, an open-air theater for 300 people, a restaurant, an event room, a green area, ample parking spaces and... An astronomical observatory named after GIORDANO BRUNO! The HOSTAL MEDIEVAL BERNAL is unique in all of Mexico in that it offers this wonderful experience for observing the universe. The name Hostal Medieval Bernal is due to the typology that merits it, such as a medieval castle.
